An “Internet Phone” (also called VoIP, IP telephony, or digital voice) is simply a phone service that uses your data connection (your internet) rather than old-style copper telephone lines. Instead of sending voice over dedicated analogue or ISDN circuits, your voice is broken into data packets and transmitted over your broadband or fibre link.
With an internet phone system, you can:
- Make and receive calls on standard desk handsets, softphones, or mobile apps.
- Use advanced features like voicemail-to-email, call forwarding, conferencing, auto attendants, call analytics, and more.
- Scale easily — add or remove lines as your business grows.
- Centralise multiple sites or remote workers on one unified system, as long as each location has an internet link.
In short: you get all the traditional “phone line” capabilities, but with more flexibility, lower long-term costs, and far greater feature richness.
What’s happening to ISDN and PSTN in the UK?
The UK is phasing out the legacy copper telephone network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). By 31 January 2027, all ISDN services (ISDN2, ISDN30) will be permanently withdrawn.
Although the PSTN/ISDN shutdown is the big move in 2027, the process is already underway: new analogue / ISDN services are no longer being sold in many areas, and providers are strongly encouraging migration to digital (IP-based) voice services well ahead of the deadline.
Because ISDN and PSTN are copper-based, old, and expensive to maintain, the industry is transitioning to a “voice over IP” future..
